| Research Activity |
The activity developes along three main research areas:
- Machine Learning: as a main result, we developed a learning algorithm for the design of Labeled Vector Quantizers under the Minimum Average Misclassification Risk. This is the first algorithm truly based on the optimization of classifier's performance, and it allows to design very simple classifiers (nearest neighbor classifiers) with relevant properties of accuracy, robustness and scalability. We study the application of LVQ trained under minimum average misclassification risk to deal with the class-imbalance problem and to develop feature reduction techniques.
- Knowledge Discovery in Databases: we are studying the development of a Service-Oriented system to support different kinds of users in the development of KDD projects (visit the KDDVM project site). We also study the extraction of meta information from data to develop evidence-based data mining methodologies and case-based support services, that support users in the choice of data mining algorithms and in the setting of parameters.
- Cooperative Information Systems: in past research we developed methodologies for semi-automatic database schema integration, using neural networks and clustering techniques. We also developed an entropic-based criterion for the generation of concept hierarchies, that can be exploited to induce domain ontologies from ground knowledge. The criterion has been used to develop a mediator system for database interoperability which manages similarity and approximate queries, thus coping with imprecision and uncertainty issues.
At present, we are interested in the semantic enrichment of different enterprise model perspectives through semantic annotation, especially strategic models.

INTEROP evolved in the stable structure called European Virtual Laboratory for Enterprise Interoperability (http://www.interop-vlab.eu/), a network of national research poles. I am a founding member and a member of the board of directors of the Italian pole "Interop-Vlab.it" (http://www.interop-vlab.it/), coordinated by CNR. - Capabilities Dinamiche tra Organizzazione d'Impresa e Sistemi Locali di Produzione (coord.
